Logan River

Love Hate Relationship

I have realized that I have a love hate relationship with the Logan River.  I fished the river with Dave Hancey this past Saturday and left the river thinking how frustrating the river has been.  I think that I have fished the Logan River about 6-8 times in my life and all but 2 of the times have caught fish so I have had decent success fishing the river.  I think the reason that the river is so frustrating is because when I drive by it I know there are fish in it and the water is some of the most clear and beautiful water I have fished.  When I do fish it I am observent and stelthy so that I don’t spook the fish but the frustration comes when I fish a run and in my mind I am thinking “what an awesome run, there will be fish in here” and I end up saying this hole after hole and run after run.  Almost everytime, like I mentioned, I catch fish and even this last time I had a fish going  after my dry or dropper landing 5 in as many hours but when leaving I always think there should be so much more fish with how the water is and with all the bug life.  I do know from people like Scott Carles AKA “Cutthroat Stalker“, a online buddy that lives in Logan, that people have 30 fish days on the river and I guess that is the finial frustration.

The conclusion I have come to is that I still have a lot to learn about fly fishing.

Trout hunting on the Logan River

img_4358I spent this weekend up at my in-laws in Smithfield just north of Logan.  Of course I brought my fishing gear to hopefully hit the Logan River.  I had permission from the wife to go up for a few hours so i planned to hit the river on Saturday.  When I woke up it was a whopping 6 degrees so I decided to wait a few hours for it to warm up.  I had talked to my friend Steve Palmer about where to go because the handful of times I have fished the Logan River I have never really had good success.  Steve spent his college years at USU and fishing the Logan River so I knew he would know where to go.  He mentioned to go up past Tony Grove and fish Red Bank.  My first thought was if the river would be iced over and not fishable.  Of course being only 6 degrees in the valley I knew it must be much colder where I was headed.  When I got to Red Bank sure enough the river had too much ice so I turn around and headed back down the canyon.  I remembered on the way up there was a spot that looked good so I decided to wet a line there.  The next couple of hours I ended up hunting for fish.  The water was awesome but not to many fish were found.  Overall it was a great day on the water exploring a new area and being absolutely alone.  I will let the video explain the rest.

Summer is almost gone!!

Thanks to Travis for the great recap on the Frenzy 08 and thanks to Hostess for making Zingers.  I don’t have any pictures but I was able to fish the Logan River up Logan canyon last week. I don’t fish it often enough to know where all the good spots are but it is such a beautiful area. As corny as it sounds I can’t help but think how much fly fishing means to me and how much I have grown to love standing in a river among the mountains and tress hunting for that perfect fish. To me it is such a spiritual experience to fish my favorite waters and even better is sharing those moments with others. I can’t wait to get my boy Max out on the river and fish side by side in the some of the most amazing places in the world that we have within hours of our doors steps.

“To go fly fishing is the chance to wash one’s soul with pure air, with the rush of the brook, or with the shimmer of sun on blue water. It brings meekness and inspiration from the decency of nature, charity toward tackle-makers, patience toward fish, a mockery of profits and egos, a quieting of hate, a rejoicing that you do not have to decide a darned thing until next week. And it is discipline in the equality of men – for all men are equal before fish.”- Herbert Hoover
