I learned a few things on Saturday

On Saturday I went up to the Wasatch Fly Tying and Fly Fishing Expo. I took my 4 year old girl and 6 year old boy hoping to expose them to some cool fly fishing things and plant the seed early. As soon as we walked in I spotted a table full of live bugs some of whch included Salmon, Stone and May flies and to my surprise my kids were memorized. We sat in front of these bugs for about 15 min asking questions and playing with the huge Salmon and Stone flies. The guy running the table was from USU and had taken all of the bugs from the Black Smith Fork for studying. He is involved in the Logan River Salmon fly Reintroduction Project where they are trying to take bugs from the Black Smith Fork and reintroduce them back into the Logan River. I don’t know a lot about this project but it sounds like they are doing some good things.
After about 15 min of hanging out with the kids I decided to go walk around and check out the vendors and fly tiers. Now I know what you are thinking, leaving my 4 and 6 year old alone, if you were there you might understand when I say the room was small and because I am 6’6″ I had an advantage of keeping my eyes on the little ones. The coolest thing about this expo was all the of fly tying going on. Before my dad past away he tied all of my flies and since then I have had to teach myself. I can honestly say that I do a good job with the basic flies but anything on an advanced or intermediate level my flies don’t look to pretty. I was able to sit down in front of one of the fly tying demonstrators Dan Noble who showed me some awesome tips and tricks. After a few min with Dan I went back, grabbed the kids and took of for home.
Overall this expo was great especially for anyone wanting to learn about fly tying but if you were looking for a ton of vendors it wouldn’t have been to impressive to you. I realized three things when I left the show;
- Don’t take my kids next time so I can spend hours watching and learning fly tying stuff.
- I need to get a rotary fly tying vise.
- I need to tie flies more often to get better.
