Snapped my TFO

Post by Jeff Thomas

Last weekend I took a trip to Missoula to hang out with my family and all of my close buddies. My best friend Casey suggested that I bring my fishing gear because he wanted to take me on a float down the Bitterroot River (South of Missoula) with his and his Brother Taylor who is a guide for the “Missoulian Angler.” I told him that I would love to do a float.

We met the next morning and headed down south. We arrived at the put in area. In a matter of seconds I snapped my TFO rod on a MONSTER (actually i just snapped it somehow as I was casting) luckily we were still in close proximity to the truck so I hopped out and got Casey’s extra 4wt. Back on the river Taylor had set us up with the appropriated flies and we pulled over on the first nice run. I had positioned myself at the top of a fast moving run and I got a huge hit on my first cast. I was hooked up on a nice brown! I had it on only for a few seconds when it jumped out of the water with a violent thrash and spit the fly. I was kind of pissed because the first one to catch a fish didn’t have to Shotgun a 16 oz Beer. Needless to say Taylor pulled in a nice Rainbow about 2 minutes later from the same hole. We headed down stream and Casey had hooked what he thought was a monster. It was fighting like crazy and running on him every time we got it close. It still turned out to be a nice rainbow but it was foul-hooked so it seemed bigger, especially on a 4 wt rod.

We caught a ton of whitefish which we kept about 15 to smoke. and quite a few Trout. The weather couldn’t have been any better. We were on the River from 11am to 6:30pm. Can’t wait to go back next time I’m in town.

Shocking News! HB-141 Passes Senate

information taken from http://utahwaterguardians.org/

A sad day for Utah’s fisherman, Representative McIff’s unconstitutional House-bill somehow passes the Senate.

In an odd twist of events, the 2nd substitute HB-141 was passed with a 19-10 vote late in the day.  The 2nd substitute HB-141 was made public only 3 hours before the vote…. in a nut shell, its still full of  problems.

Also, Senator Stowell attached a bill, SB-281 Public Access to Stream Beds – Utah Waterways Task Force, to HB-141. We’ll post a full breakdown shortly.

The Vote–>http://le.utah.gov/~2010/status/hbillsta/hb0141s02.htm Please note how your Representative voted and act according come election time. If they stood up for the Constitution and water law, send in a note thanking them.

BWO’s and Midges

Last Saturday I was feeling good enough so I gathered up the troops and headed up to the lower Provo River. I had heard from The “Dr” that there had been some amazing hatches during the week and it would most likely be the same on Saturday. I tied up some BWO’s and Midges the night before and had everything ready to head out early in the morning. I didn’t really sleep the whole night due to the fact I hadn’t been fishing for a couple months because I had hurt my back. It is funny how excited I was to fish a river I have fished my whole life and well over a few thousand times but that is how it is when you can’t get out and wet a line knowing the fishing is awesome.

We had an interesting day with cold weather in the morning overcast at about noon and then a feeding frenzy at about 1:30. Midges and BWO’s were hatching at the same time and river was boiling. We all landed many fish and left the river exhausted.

The Film Tour Update

Those that didn’t go to the Fly Fishing Film Tour in SLC the other night missed out.  It was a sold out show and the films this year were just as good or better than last year.  Not only did I win a hat and a gift certificate from Fish West but I was able to meet a few people that I chat with on Facebook and Twitter.  Overall it was a great night and I cant wait until next year.

bellow is my favorite film from this year.
