Lower Provo River Report

Provo River

Lower Provo RiverI don’t give many reports but I went out fishing on the Lower Provo River and wanted to vent some frustration and give a report on the water level and fishing.  The water level is a bit above what the mid summer flows are usually.  The Clarity right now is good as long as you stay above the Sundance road.  There is a stream that dumps into the Provo right there and it is really muddy so everything below that is a bit dirty.  I am sure you can still do well below but I would go above if you are going to try and fish it.  When I got to one of my spots I frequent it was interesting that just from the winter to now a few trees were down in river creating some totally new areas where fish can hold and the water had also pushed down a bunch of other smaller logs and trees.  It almost created a whole new stretch of river, kind of cool.  I am sure that there are a lot spots and stretches that like this and that will produce some different holding areas.  Also remember that with the water this high fish will tend to hold on the banks and where they can exert the least amount of energy.

When I got into the river I noticed a handful of small stoneflies hatching so I put on a small stone dry which didn’t work at all.  Next I rigged up some nymphs and didn’t catch anything on those either.  It was one of those days where nothing worked, I loved being in the water but the frustration set in because I couldn’t catch anything.  I left the river with not even a strike.  I am sure many people caught fish but for me it was one of those days, granted I was only there for an hour and half.

Thanks for your report. I fished the Lower Provo Wednesday morning right below the dam and was able to catch 9 fish in 2.5 hrs. I strickly use a jig which would be similiar to nymphs. I got on the water around 5:30 am and fished until 8 am. Sorry you had a frustrating experience.

Shoot! I’ve never caught a thing on the Lower Provo. Middle no problem but the Lower is a curse for me.

I’ve found that fishing the Lower can be tough in between the BWO and the PMD hatches. Once those PMDs start getting active, the fishing should be hot.
