50 Mile Riffle

Frenzy

By Jeff Thomas

I decided to go south and fish a section of river I’ve never fished before. My manager at work, Marion Savage, has told me how much he likes to fish the Upper Madison River. I’ve always wanted to hit it up but I have never really had the opportunity to get it done. Marion and I along with two other friends of mine decided to make the 90 mile trek. We stopped off at the Beartooth Fly Shop in the town of Cameron on the way down. They showed us what was working (Olive Stone fly Nymphs, Mayfly nymphs, rubber legs etc). We all mixed it up and set out on the river. I had a nice Rainbow on my third cast. The water wasn’t blown out yet which was good so the visibility was great for the fish. Ryan Graves and I headed downstream and Marion and John Hill headed Upstream. We all pulled in quite a few fish. It was a great stretch of water. Now I know why that stretch is nicknamed “The 50 mile Riffle.”
